Malt Runner

During his early years as a brewer, James Squire faced stiff competition from the Rum Runner ships crowding Sydney Harbour. That all changed, however, in 1806 when Governor Bligh began outlawing rum as a currency and squire opened his Malting Shovel Tavern. He quickly found fame shipping fine ales down the Parramatta River to Sydney’s thirsty masses, making him Australia’s original ‘Malt Runner’.

In his honour, we present this complex dark large made with five different kinds of malt. The satisfying chocolate richness and caramel malt finish is complemented by a fresh bouquet, creating the ideal winter treat.

In addition to his careers as a highway robber, baker, farmer and money lender, James Squire was the first person to grow hops in Australia. His journey from convict to respected member of the colony came to fruition when he established his brewery and the Malting Shovel Tavern on the banks of the Parramatta River. In his name, we brew on to this day.
